Consumer Unit Installation – Fuse Box

Double summer house Installations and heating System

Project Overview

I was contacted by multiple homeowners who needed to upgrade their old fuse box. The existing installation was outdated, no longer met safety standards, and caused regular inconvenience. My job was to replace it with a modern consumer unit that provides better protection, complies with the latest regulations, and gives the homeowner peace of mind.

What I Did

Isolated and safely removed the old unit

Before starting any work, the power supply was isolated to make the area safe to work on. The outdated fuse box was then carefully removed without disrupting the rest of the installation.

👉 Why this matters: Safe removal ensures there’s no risk of electric shock or damage to existing circuits during the upgrade.

Clearly labelled each circuit

Every circuit inside the consumer unit was labelled (lighting, sockets, cooker, shower, etc.), so the homeowner can quickly identify which breaker controls each part of the house.

👉 Why this matters: Clear labelling saves time in case of a fault, makes resetting circuits easier, and helps with any future electrical work.

Issued certification

After the work, I supplied an official NICEIC electrical installation certificate and notified Part P building control, as required by UK law for consumer unit replacements.

👉 Why this matters: The homeowner now has official proof that the work complies with regulations and was carried out by a qualified, registered electrician. This certification is important for safety, insurance, and when selling the property.

Metal consumer unit

Installed a new 18th Edition–compliant metal consumer unit with Type A RCBO protection and an SPD device. A modern metal consumer unit was fitted, which meets the latest UK wiring regulations (18th Edition). Each circuit is protected by a Type A RCBO, meaning every circuit has its own safety device to prevent both overcurrent and earth leakage faults. An SPD (surge protection device) was also installed to protect against voltage spikes caused by power surges or lightning strikes.

👉 Why this matters: This provides maximum safety, reduces the risk of electrical fires, and protects sensitive equipment like TVs, computers, and appliances.

Completed full testing

Completed full testing of RCBO devices (Zs values for lighting, sockets, and other circuits), checked main earth bonding, and carried out a visual inspection throughout the property. Once the installation was complete, I tested all circuits to confirm that the safety devices operate correctly. This included measuring Zs values (to make sure fault protection is within limits), verifying that main earth bonding is in place and effective, and performing a visual inspection of the wiring throughout the property.

👉 Why this matters: Testing proves that the installation is not only fitted correctly but is also safe in real-world conditions, protecting the household from shocks and faults.

The old fuse box has been replaced with a modern, 18th Edition–compliant metal consumer unit. All circuits are now individually protected with RCBOs, clearly labelled, and safeguarded with a surge protection device. Full testing and inspection were carried out to ensure the system is safe, reliable, and built to last. The homeowner was very pleased with the neat installation and complete peace of mind.

Fuse Box Replacement and Socket Work

Recently moved to a new home and wanted fuse board updating, numerous other things testing and a new double plug switch installing. Tomislav sent me a quote and was able to complete works within two days. All work was completed to an extremely high standard and all mess was taken away. Cannot thank Tomislav enough for all his help and quality of work. Will definitely be using him again in the near future to complete more works on our home.
